THERE WAS a special New Year’s baby celebrating yesterday but this one was quite a bit older than the rest.
Dayrell Thomas was born in 1912 and celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday. His family in Barbados and Canada gathered here to wish him many happy returns and treat the quiet, elderly man to a special lunch.
He also received another honour – a visit from Acting Governor General Elliott Belgrave, who brought well wishes from Queen Elizabeth II.
The former mason has one daughter, two grandchildren and a great granddaughter. His daughter, Grace Parris, said her father was a quiet, strict man.
His granddaughter, Janice Howell, takes care of him on a daily basis. She said he still attended the Jackson Church of the Nazarene and answered the phone but could not hear, see or walk very well.
