Teachers at Alexandra School will stay away from school for as long as it takes.
That was the strong message coming out of day one of the industrial action staged by the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU).
Thirty of the 33 members represented by the BSTU reported at the unions 8th Avenue, Belleville, St Michael headquarters today. One member reported ill and two others were running late. Department heads and other members of staff spoke passionately about treatment meted out to them by principal Jeff Broomes and his management style, some dating back as far as ten years.
Teachers say they have been operating in an abusive environment for far too long, and are calling for Broomes’ separation from the St Peter school.
The union is sending out correspondence to members at other schools inviting them to a general meeting. They expect all correspondence to be out by the end of this week.
President Mary Redman said the BSTU was upping its ante, and that the next step would be to withhold the labour of BSTU members at other schools.
