Principals’ union backing Broomes

THE PRINCIPALS of some of the island’s top schools are standing firm behind Alexandra principal Jeff Broomes and against the striking Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU).
After a four-hour meeting with the embattled Broomes at the Speightstown institution yesterday, the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools (BAPPSS) said it was standing in solidarity with Broomes regarding remarks made by him at the school’s awards ceremony on December 2, which are the main grouse of the BSTU strike that started last Wednesday.
Led by president Winston Crichlow, the principals said in a Press statement: “BAPPSS stands in solidarity with the principal of the Alexandra School on this issue and will work assiduously towards a speedy resolution to this impasse, which must be achieved in the interest of students and the effective functioning of all schools.”
BAPPSS said it also planned to meet with the National Union of Public Workers and the Ministry of Education on the matter Thursday. Yesterday’s meeting, which ended just after 2 p.m., involved the BAPPSS executive, namely Crichlow, principal of Harrison College, Combermere principal Vere Parris, Dr David Browne of Queen’s College, Shelton Perkins of The St Michael School and Katherine Jordan of Alma Parris Secondary, along with lawyer Cecil McCarthy, QC.
