Three-way battle at Terrace

The superior?class and fitness of the Haddock twins – Ajani and Leilani, Jamahl Burke and Kyla Jordan-Christie saw Red, Yellow and Blue engaging in an intriguing battle all day yesterday when the West Terrace Primary School’s athletics meet was held at the National Stadium.
At the end of the day, Burke of Yellow House looked a sure candidate for the victor ludorum title, while Jordan-Christie seemed likely to claim the victrix ludorum honour.
Burke and Yellow House bided their time until the relays to surge to the top with 327.5 points. The speedy Haddocks piloted Red House to 313 points, while the 2011 champions Blue ended with 316.5 and Green took the cellar with 276.
However, the results from Friday’s junior sports meet will determine the overall 2012 champions.
Blue are counting that Friday will favour them with the juniors’ title as was the case last year. The overall titles and individual points were not tabulated up to press time.
Burke looked in ominous form for NAPSAC [National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships]. After winning the 100 metres and 400 metres he returned to take the long jump title with a leap of 4.59 metres.
He was equally dominant in the 200.
While the Haddocks had no equals in their events on track, Jordan Christie’s only blip was when she ran second in the 100 metres to the towering and long-striding Xhane Greenidge.
Jordan-Christie sat out the 200 metres, which featured a keen battle ending with Mia Gaskin pipping Jakeela Griffith on the line.
Jordan-Christie returned to anchor the 4×100 metres relay team in impressive style. However, it was the form of Burke and company in the relays which saw Yellow assuming the lead for the first time for the day.
