Census results likely by July

The result of the 2010 Population and Housing Census for Barbados is not yet known and it may not be ready before summer this year.
The Barbados Statistical Service, the Government department responsible for collating the information, started the census on May 1, 2010.
However, acting director of statistical services, Aubrey Browne told BARBADOS BUSINESS AUTHORITY that completion of recording the data had been delayed due to a lack of staffing at the department.
“We are still in a position where we haven’t finished the data capture as yet. We need to get some additional staff [to do so] because we had lost our data processing staff at the end of October,” he said.
“So right now we need to rehire some people to finish the data capture. As it stands right now, it is unlikely that we are going to have any results until probably around July this year,” added Browne.
He said though, if they were lucky enough to obtain some additional staff soon they may be able to “complete the data capture before the end of this financial year”, which would be the end of March.
The census is designed to assess changes to the Barbadian population and housing landscape since 2000. At the end of 2010, the department estimated the population to be 276 302.
