A number of freighters expressed surprise when they turned up at the Bridgetown Port for work yesterday and were told they needed to pay a $30 per month user fee with immediate effect.
Lionel Harewood, Grantley Holder and Ivan Burke told the WEEKEND NATION they did not have a problem with paying the fee – it was how they found out about it that surprised them.
Speaking on behalf of other freighters, the trio said they were upset because they did not have a meeting prior to yesterday morning to inform them that they would be required to pay the user fee beginning this month.
“All we want to know, and we are entitled to that, is what you are going to do with this money that you collect and what happened to the meeting we should have before you implement the $30 per month,” demanded Holder.
