NOT ME!
That is the response of former Barbados Labour Party (BLP) St George South candidate Ian ‘Cupid’ Gill to rumours that he is planning to challenge his party colleague and Member of Parliament Gline Clarke for the candidacy in the north of the parish.
The radio personality, who carried the BLP’s flag in the last general election, told the MIDWEEK?NATION?that he had been approached by several constituents but pointed out that he was “not interested in politics at this time”.
“I have two daughters, one of whom is preparing for CXC exams and the other for A-levels . . . . They were very much against me getting involved in politics after the last experience, so I cannot put them through it at a stage at which they are preparing for examinations,” Gill said.
“Also the incumbent has stated that he is going to run again, so I’m just looking on.”
Gill, who lost to Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo by over 900 votes in 2008, added that he did not want to stir up any controversy within the party.
“People have been turning up at my door from all over the parish and everyone is aware of the fact that I have been approached by many people from all throughout St George North to take up the challenge. But I am not keen and I’m not interested in breaking up my great party. I’m not interested in creating any chaos or fracas within my party. I love the Barbados Labour Party and I will do nothing to harm my party,” he said.
“I think my party is ready with the qualified team that it has . . . to put this country back on track and I do not want at any time to distract the nation from the issues at hand . . . .”
His comments come on the heels of the controversial St James North nomination which incumbent Rawle Eastmond did not contest. (DP)
