They all wanted to dethrone Machel Montano but he added to last year’s victory by capturing both the Groovy and Power Soca Monarch in the wee hours of this morning.
With an energetic display, acrobats, drummers, fireworks and colour, especially in the uptempo Power Soca category, Montano capped Fantastic Friday night’s performance by flying through the air. Well, actually, it was a lookalike wearing the identical clothes and helmet, powered by a small mechanical device which shot him across the wide expanse of the Haseley Crawford above the heads of amazed spectators.
Montanto copped the Power title with Pump Yuh Flag, followed by another crowd favourite Neil “Iwer” George with Jab No Pain, while Destra finished third followed by a fourth place tie between Blaxx and the lyrically powerful Prophet Benjamin.
In the slow, Groovy category, Machel was first with Mr Fete, while the favourite whom most Trinis expect to win be the Road March 2012 king, Kerwin Dubois, was second with Bacchanalist.
Benjai was third, People’s and Nadia Batson, while dethroned Groovy champ Kes could only manage fifth spot.
Barbados’ lone finalist Mikey – one of other three non-Trinis in the finals – failed to place highly in the Power category after starting that segment with his 2011 Party Monarch winner Pavement Anticipation.
