The tables?have been turned on union boss Sir Roy Trotman and his powerful Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).
Some upset workers have withdrawn support from the island’s largest trade union, which is usually at the forefront of fighting for workers’ rights, citing strong dissatisfaction with the BWU’s representation.
The workers of United Commercial Autoworks Limited (UCAL), whose shareholders are the BWU, the state-run Transport Board and workshop staffers, are also angry about the tone of a letter they received from the union following the withdrawal of their membership last week.
Their letter, dated February 13, with the signatures of 60 of the 100-odd UCAL employees attached, was addressed to Sir Roy, the trade union’s general secretary and UCAL’s chairman. In it, the workers also asked for the immediate discontinuation of deductions of union dues from their salaries.
