‘Don’t leave out the community’

The head of a leading private sector agency has appealed to local corporations not to use the economic downturn as an excuse to pull support from the community.
The call came from chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association, John Williams, as representatives of the social partnership came together for the start of the 2012 Week of Excellence at the Grande Salle of the Tom Adams Financial Centre, under the theme Caring Corporations For Community Development: Working Together To Build A Better Society.
“It is undisputed that Barbados and the wider global community are facing unprecedented times and this may be a good reason for detractors of corporate social responsibility for not becoming involved. . . . However, in good times or in difficult times, a corporate [entity] is ill-advised if it does not take time to consider the community or the society in which it operates,” Williams said.
“Today, in the face of scarce resources, we are being called upon to reduce expenses and to be strategic in economic decisions, yet also to be mindful of being our brother’s keeper and to help the vulnerable.”
