Delphine delighted at reaching 100

Two years ago, the family of Delphine Gibson had resigned themselves to saying goodbye to their matriarch.
Yesterday, Barbados’ latest centenarian was making jokes and entertaining Acting Governor General Elliott Belgrave and about 50 family members and friends at her Bridge Cot, St George home.
“In 2010, we all thought she was going to die; she wasn’t eating or recognizing people but she hung on,” said her daughter Yvonne Haynes-Davis.
While Gibson, a former midwife, cannot kick like she used to, she was very much alive, showing the good natured high-spiritedness for which she had always been known.
Gibson had some words of advice for young people, as well as a few tips on what has kept her going for so long.
“I don’t know what to say to [the youth], them hard-ears and won’t hear. All I can say is love the Lord and put Him first and they would be better off.
“The Lord is the strength of my life and He could be theirs too if they listen and obey,” she said.
