Access to beaches in Barbados should not be compromised.
And it’s Government’s intention not to allow impediments as private entities explore their legal right to develop their properties.
Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley stated Government’s position yesterday during a tour of the area around the East Point Lighthouse in St Philip.
“We have started to look at acquisition of lands for public access for residents. We are preparing a paper and we are just awaiting comments from various agencies to go to Cabinet to look at the acquisition of other lands around the lighthouse so that the public would have undenied access to the beach and lookout areas along the beach,” said Lashley, who is also the Member of Parliament for St Philip North.Lashley and Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, the Acting Prime Minister, were visiting an area where members of the St Philip North Constituency Council and residents went on a debushing programme.
The aim of the clean-up was to provide a recreational facility for all Barbadians.
The lighthouse was at the centre of a controversy years ago, with residents complaining they were being denied access to the sea through the area.
Lashley described the space around the lighthouse as “a hidden treasure”. (JS)
