The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Blood Bank is making an urgent call for blood donors.
In a release today, the hospital appealed to the public who are healthy to donate blood as soon as possible as all blood types are needed at this time. “We have seen an increase of A Positive donations as a result of a recent call for that blood type, however, there is a critical need for donations of all blood types right now,” said Carolyn Williams-Gayle, QEH communication specialist.
“Over the last couple of months we have been experiencing particularly difficult times in recruiting more than enough blood donors to constantly meet the hospital’s requirements. Hence the reason there have been more calls in the last couple of months than previously experienced. People are just not coming forward as readily as they should to donate blood.”
Blood is used for the treatment of cancer patients, people with blood disorders, premature babies, transplant recipients and trauma victims.
Each whole blood donation can help save up to three lives. “We are urging people to make the decision to donate blood now,” she said. “Chances are, someone is counting on you right now for their very life.”
Volunteers can donate blood at the National Blood Collecting Centre located at Ladymeade Gardens between 8 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on weekdays or 8 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturdays.
