HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida – Teenaged Barbadian jockey Jalon Samuel was among three Caribbean riders scoring wins on Sunday’s 11-race card at Gulfstream Park.
Samuel, fresh from winning the prestigious Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup two weekends ago, produced a strong late run aboard Town of Towns to win race six over 6-1/2 furlongs.
Town of Towns, a four-year-old brown gelding, is owned by Barbados businessman Sir David Seale.
The 18-year-old Samuel also teamed up with Sir David to win the Gold Cup, when he saddled Dancin David.
Going off at odds of 3-1 on Sunday, Samuel positioned Town of Towns just off the rails, chasing the pace set by Windcat Frankie, with Strapping Groom in second.
In the stretch, Strapping Groom swept to the front before Samuel launched a furious drive aboard Town of Towns along the rails to get to the wire first by half length. (CMC)
