The minimum wage for shop assistants, some of the poorest paid workers in the country, has been increased from $200 per week to $250.
The hike took effect from March 1, Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
And domestic workers are next on Government’s wish list for a much needed raise of pay.
“Domestic workers have had the same pay for almost a decade, and that needs to be seriously looked at as well. We will be looking to improve their lot next,” the minister said.
Byer-Suckoo also revealed that she would head a drive to eventually have a new minimum wage standard for every category of worker eligible, and a draft would soon be presented to Parliament on that matter.
