People ‘must clean up lots’

MINISTER OF HEALTH Donville Inniss says there are close to 12 000 vacant lots in Barbados and, of that number, his ministry has been able to clean up approximately 500.
Contributing to debate on Government’s Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure in the House of Assembly last week, he suggested the perception among the public that it was Government’s responsibility to keep private lands overgrown by bush clean was a myth that should be dispelled.
“Many have sought to give the impression that because an individual may have paid their land tax bill, because some of them do pay land tax, that the state should therefore clear up all the vacant lots in Barbados,” he said.
“We believe that we must find ways in which individuals at the personal level can take responsibility for their own failure to act.”
