Spinner Adrian Springer captured a cheap six-wicket haul to earn Banks vital first innings honours on the first day of the rescheduled 2011 Barbados Cricket Association Intermediate Four-Day final at Weymouth yesterday.
Springer’s six for 23 from 6.4 overs sent Nature Valley Lodge School tumbling to a disappointing 67 all out from 27.4 overs.
At stumps, Banks replied with 109 for four from 27.1 overs – a lead of 42 runs going into today’s second day.
Pedro Greaves, with an attacking 43, and David Carter (27) put on an entertaining 67 in 12.5 overs for the second wicket after Lodge made an early breakthrough in the second over. Â
Greaves faced 35 balls, striking four fours and one effortless six that sailed over extra-cover.
Eventually they went in successive overs. Carter was caught at the wicket and then Greaves was bowled swinging across a delivery from physical education teacher Clifton Phillips, who has so far taken two for 31.
Springer was the last wicket of the day – caught and bowled by Philips from a firm drive for 11.
Earlier, electing to bat on a firm pitch, Lodge were dismissed just after the scheduled tea interval.
Off-spinner Marlon Hoyte and fast bowler Gregory Alleyne shared the new ball and put Lodge on the back foot from early, as they were reduced to 26 for four. They picked up two wickets each for 11 and 27, respectively. Â
Springer began on a good note when he took an excellent low catch, diving forward at gully from a top-edged pull by Akeem Reid off Alleyne.
Operating from the northern end after he replaced Alleyne, Springer sliced through the order.
In his fourth delivery, Jamar Hollingsworth was neatly taken at point by veteran Mark Estwick and in his next over Marquyse Hanson was trapped on the crease without scoring.
Rasheed Padmore was swiftly stumped outside the off-stump by Toriano Harbin, while Phillips was leg before wicket as he went tentatively forward.
National Under-15 fast-bowler Tarik Shorey made 11 not out with two of the three fours struck in the innings. He and Rashad Blackman added 19 for the last wicket – the highest stand for Lodge before Blackman was caught at long-on by Alleyne.
