Disgusting, unpatriotic and just plain wrong.
That is how many of our Facebook readers described the image of a black man on the cover of a magazine wearing nothing but the National Flag of Barbados around his loins.
The magazine The Most Beautiful Black Men, based in Brooklyn, New York, has hit the newsstands.
This is what some readers had to say about this story.
Celestine Duke: “This is totally disgusting and disrespectful. He has disgraced our flag and as far as I am concerned, it is disgraceful to even entertain the thought [of wearing] our flag like that, and all who encouraged it, are just as bad.”
Joanne B. Jordan: “Hell no. I don’t care who you are or what you are advertising, but I cannot stomach anyone disrespecting my Barbados flag like that.”
Vernetta Lawrence: “I’m a very liberal person [but] I find this very disrespectful. The flag should never be displayed in this manner.”
Margaret Ross: “Very distasteful and disrespectful to our beautiful island and its people. What happened to Bajan pride? No, no, no!”
Maria Miller: “I love Barbados and I’m very proud of the flag. I do find it disrespectful to display our flag like that.”
Nan Austin: “I certainly hope that the Government of Barbados will deplore this distasteful act and use of the Barbados flag.”
Renaldo Niles: “If that was an American flag, all hell would have broken [loose] in this country. I hope that man don’t think that’s humorous. I find it very disrespectful.”
Worshipdancer Lorde: “Disrespecting my Barbados flag like that and me too? I am 100 per cent Barbadian and to see this is a no-no. This is definitely not acceptable.”
Congratulations also went out to students at Springer Memorial and Queen’s College who are still at the top in the Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships. Springer Memorial won among the girls, while Queen’s College were No. 1 among the boys.
Dorian Brome: “Congratulations to Springer Memorial – we are still simply the best. Total domination. as our motto says: Members one to another. Ms Jones, thank you for your continued dedication to greatness. Nuff love. From the USA.”
Cheryl A. Rollins: “Believe and Achieve! We have the winning formula. Keep up the good work, students!! The old scholars are behind you every step of the way!”
Althea Ellis: “Well done, Queen’s College; keep up the good work, Springer.”
Congratulations also went to West Terrace Primary School Tigers who won a double at the Pine Hill National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championships.
