Insurers’ call

Motor vehicle accidents have been costing insurers “substantial” payouts over the past three years. And the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB) said yesterday that while there would be no immediate hike in premiums, it wanted stiffer action against road traffic violators.
Their main suggestion is that drivers involved in accidents should no longer be given 24 hours to produce their driver’s licence and proof of insurance.
“If you cannot produce these things at the scene of the accident, until this documentation comes, we’re suggesting that your car be impounded because people give fraudulent names and you can [say you are insured with] any insurance company . . . but then after that they don’t go to the [police] station to give the information,” said GIAB vice-president Anton Lovell.
He noted that already this year there were six road fatalities compared to two over the same period last year.
