WARRIORS AND COUGARS should find out by weekend what is left of their rosters – if anything.
The Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s executive is set to hold an emergency meeting this evening ahead of Thursday’s disciplinaryhearing to deal with an all-out brawl that saw both benches cleared in last weekend’s featured Premier League contest.
For their role in the fracas, brothers Kirk and Tremaine Shaw and Warriors teammates Kareem Farrell, Trevor Simmons and Justin Maloney – along with Cougars duo Godfrey Leacock and Anthony White – could be facing heavy sanctions following Saturday’s ugly melee at the Wildey Gym.
And at least six other players are expected to receive automatic one-game suspensions for leaving the bench area and stepping on to the court.
The possible suspensions could spell doom for Cougars ahead of this Sunday’s anticipated match-up against unbeaten league champsLakers, as the Hothersal side could be missing as many as five players from their nine-man roster.
However, Warriors might be without even more for Saturday’s game against Station Hill Cavaliers, but they have 13 registered Premier League players.
It’s the result of one of the worst player brawls in recent league history, as tempers flared and both benches cleared when Leacockand Farrell got into a heated scuffle at mid-court.
This has come just 11 months after the UWI Games’ men’s title clash between Cave Hill and Mona ended prematurely following a no-holds barred fracas among opposing players and fans.
Just three months later, Cavs forward Ricardo Yearwood was banned for life after drop-kicking then Cougars guard Keith Yearwood in a league game, while five other players were also given suspensions ranging from two games to three months in that same week. (JM)
