Little school spending

City stores selling school supplies registered moderate sales over the weekend, ahead of today’s resumption of classes.
On Friday afternoon and yesterday the usual “go-to” places for school supplies were virtually empty though some stores were seeing a bit more traffic.
Increased traffic was noted in all the back-to-school departments at F. W. Woolworth and Company. Store manager Martin Bryan said that in recent days sales had picked up, with clothing and stationery doing better, but the company was not overly busy.
Bryan said spending habits had also changed because of the troubled state of the economy, with parents and guardians spreading their purchases over the summer, Christmas and Easter school breaks.
