PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar today announced that her administration would be bringing legislation to Parliament to make the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) the island’s final court of appeal.
“Such a measure will require a special majority and we look forward to bi partisan support,” she told Parliament.
The CCJ was established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council. Most of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are members of its original jurisdiction, while only Barbados, Belize and Guyana are members of its appellate jurisdiction.
The CCJ also functions as an international tribunal interpreting the Revised Treaty of Chagauaramas that governs the regional integration movement. (CMC)
