BY?THE?reckoning of Australian opener Ed Cowan, the 310-run lead his team carries into today’s fourth day of this Windsor Park Test cricket match is already a winning total on “a bloody difficult wicket”.
Australia will come back this morning on 200 for six in their second innings and in firm control. Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s third score above 50 in the series – 68 – was not enough to repair the damage done by the batting collapse on day three, and West Indies were eventually dismissed for 218 in their first innings, 110 runs behind Australia’s 328.
West Indies’ task sometime today will, therefore, be as tall as the Morne Watt, Morne Anglais and Morne Micotrin ranges towering over the Park.
“Over 300 to chase is a hell of a lot of runs,” Cowan said after play. “Fifty on a wicket like that can be as good as a hundred. So if we can get to lunch, maybe 350, 360 (ahead), all of a sudden, that’s a winning total. I think we’ve got enough already.”
