‘Joint duty’  to care for the poor

THE RESPONSIBILITY for creating programmes and policies targeting the poor and vulnerable must be shared between the state, the private sector and non-governmental organizations, says Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development Stephen Blackett.
The minister said that although Government had traditionally taken the lead in social interventions, new and emerging views called for more broad-based involvement.
“There must be a shared understanding, recognition and commitment to the pursuing and adoption by all sections of Barbadian society of the core values underpinning social policy as a means to ensuring equitable social outcomes for all,” Blackett said.
He was speaking at the National Consultation on the Country Assessment Of Living Conditions (CALC) study at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Tuesday where a cross section of the society got to hear and discuss the report of the CALC study.
