Deejays hurting local artists

Barbadian deejays have been criticized for not playing enough local music.
The rebuke is coming from two prominent local recording artists who feel that the lack of airplay is denying them much needed royalties.
One of the artists, Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire, said deejays were taken from the clubs and placed on the radio stations and a lot of them did not understand how important it was to support local art.
 “The more foreign music we play here, the less royalties local performers are going to get, which means they have less money to produce. This is why most of these people are making . . . fast-food music, because they are making music for the Crop Over Festival . . . to get a little dollar to do a record the next year.
“This is why the music appears to be watered down; most of the fellows don’t have a choice.” (JS)
