A DRAMATIC batting collapse triggered by Carlos Brathwaite and Ryan Austin undermined the excellent work of Renaldo and Shane Parris as Sagicor UWI took first innings lead over CGI Maple yesterday.
Replying to UWI’s 188, Maple disintegrated to be all out for 170 after seemingly cruising at 138 for three. Â
By the close of play, UWI had stretched their narrow 18-run lead to 30, reaching 12 for one.
Pacer Brathwaite 4-22) and off-spinner Austin (3-53) shared seven of the wickets while Renaldo and Shane Parris compiled a century stand.
Resuming on 188 for nine, UWI failed to add to their over-week score as Khalid Springer removed Liam Sebastien in the first over..
UWI struck two early blows with Sebastien bowling Jed Yearwood for one while Marques Clarke had Akeem Nero caught at the wicket by Kyle Corbin, also for one, to leave Maple struggling on seven for two.
Renaldo and Shane Parris, unrelated but former schoolmates at the Coleridge & Parry School, rebuilt the innings in a stand of 104 put together in 163 minutes off 258 balls.
The pair started cautiously before Shane accelerated, playing several attractive strokes as Maple moved into a strong position. The opener’s half-century came off 109 balls in 147 minutes with three fours and six threes.
Jonathan Carter broke the troublesome partnership just after tea, which was taken at 104 for two, when he had Renaldo Parris lbw for 31. He had faced 121 deliveries and struck a solitary boundary.
Dario Cummins and Shane Parris calmly took the score to 138 before the real drama unfolded.
Brathwaite bowled Parris for an elegant 87 made off 175 balls in 217 minutes. Parris struck four fours and eight threes. Â
The breakthrough proved to be the catalyst for the total destruction of Maple’s innings as seven wickets tumbled for just 32 runs.
Collis Worrell fell lbw to a fast delivery from Austin that kept low. Captain Pedro Agard was taken bat/pad by Nekoli Parris, also off Austin, while Springer tugged an Austin delivery straight to Floyd Reifer at mid-wicket.
Barrington Yearwood’s attempt at a counter-attack ended when he was caught at gully by Carter off Brathwaite, having launched two fours in a knock of 11.
In six overs before the close UWI lost Kyle Corbin cheaply but Omar Phillips and Parris saw them to the close without further alarms.
