CENTENARIAN DELPHINE JOHNSON took a walk down memory lane by sharing stories of her childhood with family and friends on Saturday when they visited as part of her birthday celebration.
The wit, vivid memory and spritely spirit of the birthday girl shone through as she spoke of being born and raised in Ellis Hill, which is now the home of Harrison’s Cave, and her days as a plantation worker.
Delphine, more familiarly known as “Dunk” – a name she got because of her small size – recalled that as a girl of 18 years she started work at Walkes Spring Plantation as a labourer and in times when it was not always safe to do so.
“I walked through Sturges and Lonesome cane gully by myself and not a soul ain’t hold me. I see a bicycle man lying down hiding and I run past he, down through the cane and he ain’t get me hold, thank God,” she said.
