Belgrave 3rd at Optimum Classic

Lyndon?Belgrave delivered his best performance in bodybuilding’s pro ranks, earning himself a satisfying third place at the Optimum Classic men’s bodybuilding pro contest in Shreveport, Louisiana, over the weekend.
The championships, which featured fitness, figure, and bikini contests also attracted another Barbadian, Rosalind Vanterpool, who took seventh in the figure competition.
It was the first phase of Belgrave’s preparations for this year’s newly created Olympia 212-pound competition slated to take place between September 27 and 30 in Las Vegas.
Belgrave, 42, told NATIONSPORT he was in much better shape than he was last year when he took second place at the 2011 Sacramento Pro 212 that qualified him for the Olympia.
“I was much better, both in terms of size and sharpness. I am happy with how I looked. One of the judges told me that I was a lot better in the evening than in the morning,” said Belgrave, who returned home with Vanterpool and coach Carl Moore on Sunday night.
The five-man contest was won by American Jose Raymond, last year’s winner of the New York Pro 202, and the third placed finisher in the Olympia 202.
“He [Raymond] has huge arms and shoulders and obviously caught the judges’ eyes,” Belgrave said.
The three-time Mr Barbados and former Mr Caribbean champion stepped on stage at the Shreveport Convention Centre with 207 pounds of muscle, and he plans to showcase his monstrous thighs, sliced hamstrings and flamboyant posing next month at the Toronto Pro Supershow in Canada.
When he leaves here in two weeks’ time for Toronto, he will come face to face with the “Welsh Dragon” James “Flex”?Lewis, one of the favourites for this year’s Olympia 212 title.
He thinks the 212-and-Under class is tailor-made for him.
Belgrave said he thought Vanterpool would have placed higher.
“From what I saw, she could have done better, but it is not easy coming out of the Caribbean to go to the United States and pull it off. She looked really good and didn’t look much different than the girl who won.
“Roslyn had good shape and looked really good. She got some good reviews . . . . I saw some good reviews on online and the comments were quite positive,” he said.
