PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, May 20, CMC – Four people were killed and three others, including Acting Chief Justice Wendell Kangaloo, were critically injured in an early Sunday morning smash-up on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, the island’s main east-west thoroughfare, east of here, medical authorities here said.
The name of the four dead have not yet been disclosed but hospital authorities confirmed that Justice Kangaloo and two of his bodyguards are in critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, east of here.
Media reports quoted eyewitnesses as saying one of the vehicles involved in the crash crossed the median and slammed into the vehicle in which Justice Kangaloo was a passenger. Body parts littered the highway along the busy east-west corridor, according to reports.
The police said that all those killed were in one car, a Mitsubishi Lancer, and that the accident occurred around 5.45 a.m. (0945 GMT).
Transport Commissioner Ruben Cato is quoted in the Sunday Express newspaper as saying that the situation regarding road deaths in Trinidad and Tobago “is out of control”.
“I think the authorities are paying little or no attention to the rate of accidents on our roads. I don’t think there is a national holistic plan to address the issue,” he told the newspaper.
So far this year, 68 people have been people have been killed in road accidents here.
