There is no substitute for discipline and respect, said Anglican Bishop Dr John Holder, and there are too many instances of the elderly being abandoned in nursing and senior citizens homes.
Speaking at the annual Synod of the Anglican Church at St Michael’s Cathedral yesterday afternoon, Bishop Holder said it was important the society and the church kept preaching and teaching that there was no worthwhile substitute for discipline and thrift if Barbados was sustain and build on its solid foundation.
Holder said there had been a long and noble tradition in Barbados of respecting one another but this had to be passed on to the youth.
“There are far too many stories of young people not giving deference to the elderly in situations like travelling on public transport.
“There are still far too many stories of the elderly being abandoned in our institutions of care. There will be many explanations [for] this, but it cuts across the traditional strong support system that families have provided for their elderly over the years,” he said. (MK)
