Judoka joins list of Olympics hopefuls

Judoka Kyle Maxwell is the fourth Barbadian confirmed for the London 2012 Olympic Games, joining a select group of his peers in the process.
Maxwell, 21, is only the third judoka to represent Barbados at the Olympic Games, the others being Andrew Payne, in Atlanta 1996, and Barry Jackman eight years later in Athens.
“When I found out, I couldn’t stop smiling because basically you’re at the highest level in any sporting aspect whether it be judo, track and field or whatever,” Maxwell told NATIONSPORT yesterday.
“The best part about it was that judo is not the No. 1 sport and a lot of people don’t follow it. Yet, we are at the point where we can say ‘We are here. We have an athlete who has basically gained the status of qualification to the Olympics’.”
