TWO CRICKETERS with plenty to prove joined forces in a record seventh-wicket stand as the West Indies showed some fighting qualities yesterday, recovering from 136 for six to a respectable 304 for six against England on the first day of the second Wisden Test at Trent Bridge.
Marlon Samuels fashioned a responsible, unbeaten 107, while captain Darren Sammy (here executing a cut shot, watched by England wicketkeeper Matt Prior) posted his highest Test score of 88 not out.
“Our plan worked to perfection and it’s a wonderful feeling,” Samuels said. “To score runs against the No. 1 team in the world is a good feeling for me, and it was fantastic that we got the captain to come out and play a wonderful innings as well.”
The record-breaking partnership of 168 erased the previous mark established by Collie Smith and John Goddard 55 years ago. (EZS)
