The CARICOM Single Market and Economy will work to make the Caribbean a borderless region. Before it does, a number of refinements have to be made to the current system.
That’s the word from Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, Robert “Bobby” Morris.
In an exclusive interview with the MIDWEEK?NATION recently, he said that true definition of professions, certification and categorization all needed to be sorted out before Caribbean nationals could move and work freely in the region.
“If someone says they are a media person, what does that really mean? Is it their actual profession, or do they have a job at a media company, or are they simply a freelancer? What about if someone says they are an artiste? How is that really defined?” Morris asked.
The former trade unionist said once a proper structure was put in place by CARICOM to determine the exact definitions and categories of workers wanting to move freely, then that would make a final programme much more workable.
“Once such a structure is put in place, the problems we are seeing now regarding the movement of nationals, especially to work, would be reduced,” Morris said.
