GG shows we can all achieve

I WOULD LIKE the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, both radio and TV, as well as the Voice of Barbados and the print media, to carry the address delivered by new Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at his installation last Friday in the Senate.
Notice should be given long in advance, and all parents and guardians should make their children sit and listen to the speech.
In an honest speech that pointed out his humble beginnings, Sir Elliot said that it did not matter where one started but where one ended up.
The speech was a very emotional one, and at certain points the Head of State reflected on his parents and their struggle to educate him as a boy growing up in Boscobel, St Peter.
It brought tears to my eyes, when he said that his father died when he was in the fifth form at the Coleridge School in St Peter. The death of his father could have been a crossroads. But God was there for him. His journey to the Coleridge School was by foot and occasionally by cane truck during the crop season.
I cried because I remembered my own experience going to school at the Federal High School. I loved the days in the crop season because I got rides to school on the Kendal, Colleton and Guinea syrup truck. Those were the days! Children today do not know about those early struggles that many of us had. Today, our children have everything for free: free education, free books, free laptops, free bus fare and God knows what else.
Sir Elliott is a good old-fashioned person, and I am sure that as Head of State he will maintain the nobility of the office of Governor General.
I am sure that our Head of State is a living testimony for all of us that it does not matter where we come from or how poor we may be, we can all achieve.
May the Lord continue to bless our Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave.
