SERIOUS CONSIDERATION is being given to introducing the Graduated Driver Licence (GDL) in Barbados, says Deputy Chief Technical Officer Cheryl Bennett-Inniss of the Ministry of Transport and Works.
The ministry was evaluating suggestions from Barbadians and conducting research and would have the proposals sent to the committee of the Barbados National Road Safety Council to determine the best way the system could be implemented, she reported.
A system such as this is currently used in the United States of America and Canada and other parts of the world.
The GDL programme gradually phases in driving privileges for new teen drivers as they gain experience behind the wheel.
