OVER THE NEXT SIX MONTHS, staff and students of the University of the West Indies (UWI) will be competing in an effort to emerge as the fittest group in their Fit Five programme.
The programme, which was launched last week, is aimed at having them eat right and exercise while having fun.
Co-chairman of the UWI Health Week committee, Damian Cohall, said: “It is more than a weight loss programme but a competition where teams of five persons are competing to see who can be the fittest on campus over a six-month period.”
The programme, which has 12 registered groups of five people, is supported by the UWI Health Week committee and organized under the UWI Healthy Campus initiative.
Cohall said that participants must have a clear mind and be ready to take part in some good clean fun because it was a healthy competition to promote healthy lifestyles.
He added that as part of the thrust of the week of activities, the message was that components such as spiritual and mental wellness should be catered to, in addition to physical health.
“It is a move away from just physical health for wellness purposes but we also want to focus on the spiritual and mental, which are also relevant in this day and age,” Cohall said.
The theme for the week was Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, and the activities included a lunchtime lecture, a healthy food tasting session on Thursday and a health fair. (LK)
