Holding the past, building the future

WHEN STONE COLLAPSED, they remained steadfast.
When heat builds and air conditioning units struggle to crank out cooling air, they remain breezy and bright.
When roofs blew off during Janet, their crowning glory shrugged off the hurricane forces winds.
Now the island’s signature chattel houses have been captured for all times in a collaborative effort between renowned international photographer Bob Kiss and architectural historian Senator Professor Henry Fraser.
The book, entitled Barbados Chattel Houses, traces the history of the wooden structures; showcases some of the best and worst examples of the style of building, and looks at the possible future.
