The Nation’s Online Editor Carol Martindale looks at What’s Trending today in Barbados.
There might not be as much partying and feteing in Barbados this year for Crop Over because some party promoters are having some problems obtaining the necessary licences to hold the weekday and weekend parties and limes.
Some have already been refused entertainment licences for the year – and they are hopping mad!
The promoters are planning to meet tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Copa on Bay Street, St Michael, to discuss some of the problems they are having.
A note circulated to the promoters said: “The limitations imposed by this new system not only affect our businesses but also the social pulse of the island.”
Readers weighed in on this issue:
Andrew Minaj: “I would like the promoters to withdraw all fetes from de festival and see if there would be a Crop Over.”
Simon Gooding: “Some people like they forgot what is the meaning of Crop Over. It is the time of the year when the slaves could celebrate after the sugar harvest. Massa still have the last word.”
Osun Kay: “Wow. What really going on with Barbados and Cropover? Stupse.”
Don Reid: “The less the better.”
Reeko Lynch: “Crop Over: The sweetest drama-filled summer festival.”
