AWRIGHT DEN: Religiously worrying

Last Thursday, June 28, the DAILY NATION carried an article headlined Morris, CBC At Odds. It began “Reverend Charles Morris has cried foul over CBC’s suspension of the television programme Religiously Reasoning.” The article added: “Morris also spoke of being informed that a letter bearing the signatures of over 456 people had been sent to CBC objecting to the programme.”
It would be interesting to find this out: If I got 457 people to sign a letter, would CBC also suspend Days Of Our Lives?
I am a bit confused. If Religiously Reasoning, which is hosted by John Lovell, is suspended, why is Preaching It with Charles Morris still being broadcast on Mornin Barbados? In my view, he is delivering the same message.
Charles Morris has developed a following due to his interpretation or misinterpretation of The Bible, which satisfies the fleshly and worldly desires of his followers. I fully agree with Marina Ward, who wrote in Tuesday’s NATION: “I am seeing a tendency to create God in our own image.”
As I have said before, without God as the supreme foundation for moral values, we are lost in a world of socio-cultural relativism. Unless one shares a biblical world view, then the defining and establishment of moral values will be determined by culture, the law and societal opinion, all of which can change at any time.
The Bible also clearly states in 1 Corinthians 2:14: “A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Last week I wrote an article explaining that it is only through relationship with God that true understanding of Him is revealed.
Over the last year, I have been documenting the sayings and beliefs of Charles Morris, which he shared on national television, and I want to share some of them with you. In some, I am paraphrasing. I have also mentioned some scriptures that contradict what the reverend has taught.
1. He said: “Sex before marriage is not a sin because fornication only speaks about promiscuity and there is no evidence in The Bible that sex before marriage is a sin.” 1 Corinthians 6:18
2. He said: “We don’t go into a store and buy a pair of shoes before trying them on.” He is basically saying, you should sleep with a man/woman and try them out before deciding to marry or be in relationship with them. 1 Corinthians 7:2
3. Many things in The Bible aren’t to be taken literally. The story of the creation of the earth and Adam and Eve is fictional and only a theory. 2 Timothy 3:16
4. Homosexuality is not a sin. 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10
5. There is no such thing as the devil and evil spirits. Matthew 4:1; Acts 19:15
6. When asked if he believes in God, he said he believes in the Christian concept of God.
7. He does not believe in heaven or hell and wants to know where they are. Matthew 6:9; Luke 10:15
8. He doesn’t believe in the return of Jesus Christ; he says that Christ comes every day. John 14: 1-3
9. He does not hold to one of the main principles of the Christian faith, the resurrection of Christ. Matthew 28
Since Charles Morris is a reverend in the Anglican Church and the leadership within this church has not condemned what he has said, they have left the public to assume these are the beliefs of the Anglican Church.
I want you the public to know that Charles Morris currently has the biggest congregation in Barbados. Think about the many people he speaks to each time he is on television.
If an atheist or non-believer had made those statements above, I would not be as concerned, but for them to be said by a “reverend” is blasphemous.
I close with 2 Peter 2: 1-2 (New Living Translation):
“1. But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves.
“2. Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered.”
