Jeff Broomes needs psychological help.
That’s what a former chairman of the Alexandra School told a Commission of Inquiry this afternoon.
Independent senator Velma Newton testified that Broomes has serious anger management issues that need to be resolved.
“I observed him over the year I was chairman. He had problems containing his anger,” Senator Newton testified. “I thought he needed psychological help. Sometimes he would explode for no apparent reason.”
Newton made the suggestion for Broomes to get psychological help in direct response to a question from Commissioner, retired judge Frederick Waterman.
“I saw his interaction with the students as well. He would be patting the boys on their backs, and high-fiving the girls,” Senator Newton added.
The senator, who is also a former Alexandra student, and who was also a previous board member when Ada Straughn was principal, said she never had a one-on-one meeting with Broomes about his attitude.
“I never thought about meeting him one-on-one. He was too unpleasant. He wanted to ensure the school was run a certain way. I didn’t think meeting him would make a difference.”
Senator Newton also admitted she resigned after only a year as chairman, because it was “wearing me down.”
