SIX-TIME QUEENS BARBADOS made a battling and successful start to the 14th edition of the Caribbean Volleyball Championship (CVC), which served off in St Croix, the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), on Tuesday night.
Led by former repeat MVP Shari Matthews and hyper veteran Julia Lewis, Barbados thwarted Guadeloupe 16-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-15.
The Bajans packed the superior net firepower, but subpar passing saw Guadeloupe taking the first set and threatening in the third.
Newcomer Akeelah Phillips came off the bench to impress with her passing and attack for Barbados to take the match and almost guarantee a trip to the semi-finals.
Along with Barbados and Guadeloupe, the defending champions Trinidad and Tobago are in Group B.
Placing second in the group would mean that Barbados would most likely play the hosts in the quarter-finals.
Tonight Barbados will meet Trinidad and Tobago who were due to clash with Guadeloupe yesterday.
