Barbadians hoping to see live 2012 London Olympic Games coverage yesterday on the state-owned CBC-TV8 were left disappointed and angry.
The SUNDAY SUN understands American television network NBC has the worldwide rights to air the Olympics, while International Media Content (IMC), the parent company of regional sports cable channel SportsMax, has the regional rights and the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has the rights to air the Olympic Games in Barbados.
However, those who turned to Channel 8 hoping to see coverage of the largest sporting event on earth were instead shown Day 4 of the cricket Test match between West Indies and New Zealand, while Multichoice channels MSNBC 203 and NBC 706 had blue screens and the message: Viewers please note coverage of the London 2012 Olympics will not be aired on this channel. IMC has the exclusive broadcast rights for the games. The Olympics can alternatively be viewed on CBCTV8. In addition, the opening ceremony was delayed on Friday while CBC aired Day 3 of the match.
One woman, who identified herself as F. Rogers, said she thought CBC was being unfair.
