Young revellers were loose at the National Stadium yesterday for the 2012 Crop Over Junior Kadooment in association with Cave Shepherd, Samaroos and Brands of Barbados.
In a reversal from previous years, the close to 3 000 revellers in 16 bands played mas’ from the Stadium, where they paraded before the judges, and then went to the Lawrence T. Gay Memorial School, where the jump-up previously started.
From tiny tots to teens, the young ones depicted various themes in the intricately made costumes from a variety of materials which transformed the Stadium into a kaleidoscope of colour.
There was a clock tower, fruits, sailors, mermaids and many other characters as the youngsters delved into the world of fantasy.
While some of them had to be prodded when they took centre stage to parade before the judges, the juniors had a ball strutting their stuff.
One youngster excitedly mimicked multiple award-winning flag person Didi. Much to the delight of onlookers, the youngster continued the movementations well after another section of the band was in the spotlight.
In addition to popular artists from previous years, Mikey, Li’l Rick, Dutty Android and Crimeson were among those getting lots of airplay in the arena and along the route.
Bandleader Gwyneth Squires had the most revellers registered for Fruits A Plenty with 360, while the lowest was in Quimby’s Explosion, which led off the parade.
The numbers inside the Stadium were sparse, but thousands took up just about every vantage point leading from the Lumber Company gate, where the bands exited, and along Codrington Road and Spooner’s Hill outside of the school. (YB)
