Several Barbadians rushed to the Land Tax Department yesterday to take advantage of the last day of the tax amnesty.
An employee at the department told the MIDWEEK?NATION that from early yesterday morning so many people turned up to pay the tax that at times the line was spilling out on the corridor.
The office remained open even after the 3 p.m. closing time to accommodate the many people who were still there.
In this year’s Budget, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Chris Sinckler announced the amnesty for those in arrears for the years 1981-1982 to 2011-2012.
It allowed taxpayers to benefit from a 100 per cent waiver of both penalty and interest if the full amount of the principal was a “one-off” payment for the respective year.
Additionally, taxpayers who were unable to pay off the total amount could make payments on a year-by-year basis and still benefit from the waiver of taxes for those years. (MB)
