Bajans on the back foot

An impressive five-wicket haul by fast bowler Christopher Powell gave title-holders Jamaica the upper hand over Barbados on the opening day of the third round of matches in the WICB Regional Under-19 three-day championship yesterday.
The tall, lanky 17-year-old Powell captured five for 22 from 13.5 overs, as Barbados were routed for a paltry 106 in 64.5 overs with only three batsmen reaching double digits.
By stumps, Jamaica had reached 62 for four with debutant off-spinner Neil Persaud grabbing two wickets.
After today’s rest day, the match will resume tomorrow.
The start of play was delayed by 45 minutes due to a damp pitch and Barbados were invited to bat.
Shayne Moseley’s poor form continued when he stuck his bat outside
the off stump and edged a catch behind off Powell for five.
Drama unfolded in the seventh over when Craig St Hill, backing up too far, was run out at the non-striker’s end by Powell.
Off the next delivery, Shai Hope, who seemed put off by what happened, was caught down the leg-side by Aldaine Thomas for a fifth-ball “duck”.
It was a rare failure for Hope, who came into the match with two centuries in the first two games.
On a slowish pitch, Barbados laboured to lunch at 30 for three from 17 overs.
