Awards of excellence

Barbados’ first Olympic medallist Jim Wedderburn and other sports personalities were honoured during the 2012 Mason Family Reunion’s celebration dinner and awards ceremony at Divi Southwinds Resort last Saturday night.
Wedderburn, who won a bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics as a member of the British West Indies team, was among those family members receiving Awards of Excellence.
Also receiving these awards were long-standing Lodge School physical education teacher McDonald Fingall, international cricket commentator Andrew Mason and former Barbados volleyballer Cedric Proverbs, who served as tactical commander on the ground during the staging of matches in Barbados for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Among those receiving Special Achievement Awards were current Barbados senior and Under-19 cricket team manager Livingstone Coppin, former St Catherine and one-time Barbados fast bowler Neville Mason, CARIFTA Games’ Under-17 Girls’ 800-metre gold medallist Cindy Forde and former youth batting sensation Shawn Sargeant, who still holds the record for the most runs (920) in the annual LIME Under-15 Tournament.
Ten-time calypso Pic-O-D-Crop monarch Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire, who played cricket for St Catherine prior to his entry into the calypso arena, was also among those receiving Awards of Excellence.
LIME Masters cricketer Dane Coppin, who is presently the acting  Accountant General in the Treasury Department of the Ministry of Finance, was also a recipient of an Excellence award. (EZS)
