Concern over criticisms

CONCERN HAS BEEN expressed about the harsh criticisms levelled at teachers and the principal in the ongoing Alexandra Secondary School Commission of Inquiry, which entered its 25th day at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Complex yesterday.
Sole commissioner, retired judge Frederick Waterman, said yesterday he was particularly concerned about some young teachers appearing before him to give evidence and “openly criticizing the deputy principal, heads of departments and senior teachers, and then having to go back and work with them”.
He said this did not augur well for the future.
Queen’s Counsel Vernon Smith, who is representing principal Jeff Broomes, also reminded the commission that several teachers had similarly testified and said “nasty things” about Broomes.
Waterman agreed, adding that Broomes was “still pretty young” himself, and when such comments were reported by the media and went beyond Barbados, they could have serious implications for the future lives of those involved. (RJ)
