PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Heavy rains associated with the passage of a tropical depression have caused widespread damage and unconfirmed reports of at least one death.
Weather officials said Tropical Depression Seven, which is located 150 miles east-north-east of Barbados, had been affecting the island, causing landsides and rivers to overflow their banks mainly in the west of here, where at least one man was reported to have been killed when his house collapsed.
Works Minister Emmanuel George, speaking on radio, said members of the army have been deployed to assist disaster preparedness officials and that his office had received numerous reports of being marooned in their homes.
“When I looked out of my home, the road which runs alongside my home was completely covered in red water, it could not been seen at all and that is something I never saw since I have been living here for the past 30 years,” said George. (CMC)
