BARBADOS’ badminton players continue to play impressively at the CAREBACO?International Championships in Santo Domingo, yesterday.
Shari Watson won her women’s singles when she defeated Yamile González of the Dominican Republic 21-5, 21-15 to advance to today’s quarter-final round where she will play Charmaine Reid of Canada.
Barbadians Andre Padmore and Kevin Wood also advanced to the quarterfinals when they defeated Puerto Rican pair of Heriberto and Maldonado 21-16, 21-15. They will now play the Jamaican pair of Henry and Palmer in the semi-finals.
In the mixed doubles, Wood and Sabrina Scott won 21-14, 21-18 against Colour and Tjtirodipo of Suriname to secure a berth in the quarter-finals as well.
In the Juniors, Nicolas Howard and Makenzie Howard won 21-15, 22-20 against Samuel Rosado and Greylis Figuereo to reach the semi-finals of the Boys’ Under-11 age group.
In the Girls’ Under-13 division, Amanda Haywood won 21-1, 21-4 against Escarlet Sanchez to reach semi-finals while in the Under-15 doubles, Shae Martin and Haywood triumphed 21-13, 19-21, 21-13 against Rafeli Perez and Anny Sanchez to reach the last eight.
Daniel Duncan and Martin defeated Wilmer Brea and Luis De La Cruz 19-21, 21-19, 21-13 to also progress to the Boys’ Under-15 doubles quarter finals.
In the Boys’ Under-17 doubles, Derion Hurley and D’Andre Thorpe won 21-16, 21-18 against Joselito Sanchez and Pedro Zapata to reach the semi-finals.
