WITH UNEMPLOYMENT RISING, a number of people are applying and are being hired for jobs they have no training in.
This is the assessment of Peter Downes, chief executive officer of Profiles Caribbean Inc. (PCI), who also noted that some people were currently employed in jobs they did not like.
Downes was making a presentation during the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados’ Continuing Professional Development Seminar on International Business (Update 2012) at the Hilton Barbados last Friday.
“What I have seen over the last few years is that because the employment industry is getting a little tighter and unemployment is increasing, more people who were trained in particular areas are going into jobs that they were not originally trained in, and similarly, the second statistic shows that about two-thirds of people currently in jobs don’t really like what they do,” he said.
Downes was making a presentation on human resource management and development.
“Interestingly enough, if they have the chance to change their job, they probably will. A lot of things keep people in jobs – the benefits, the salary and so on – but a lot of people do not particularly like their jobs,” stressed Downes.
“Then, of course, you have the issue of instinctive hiring; you hire according to feeling. So I think all of us would agree that there is a need for change. This change is needed because the applicant out there is becoming more and more unpredictable,” he added.
PCI is a regional company which was established to provide organizations with technologically advanced human resource tools and services to help them to hire, train, manage and develop people more effectively. PCI was established in 1994. (MM)
